What Is an ECG?

What Happens During the Test?
Electrodes are attached to the skin using adhesive pads. The patient lies still while the ECG machine records the heart's electrical signals. The test does not send electricity into the body and is usually completed within a few minutes.
Understanding ECG Results
ECG interpretation includes heart rate, rhythm, electrical intervals, conduction pattern, axis and selected wave changes. A normal ECG does not always exclude intermittent rhythm problems or all forms of heart disease, which is why symptoms and other investigations remain important.
Normal ECG but Ongoing Symptoms
If palpitations, dizziness or fainting continue despite a normal resting ECG, the physician may consider Holter monitoring, event recording, echocardiography, blood tests or specialist referral.
ECG in High Blood Pressure
Long-standing hypertension may cause heart strain or enlargement. ECG can provide useful clues, while echocardiography may be recommended for a more detailed assessment of heart structure and function.
ECG in Diabetes
Diabetes increases cardiovascular risk and may sometimes reduce the typical warning symptoms of heart disease. ECG testing may be advised when symptoms, risk factors or pre-operative assessment indicate.
ECG and Thyroid Disorders
